The Friday Whisper
Anticipation: Preparing the Heart
How a few small Friday habits change the feel of the whole Sabbath.
Most of us know what it feels like to arrive at something we did not prepare for. We walk into the room still carrying the drive there, the unanswered message, the half-finished thought. We are present in body, but our hearts are still catching up.
The Gospels remember that the first followers of Jesus did not stumble into the Sabbath that way, even in the worst week of their lives. Luke slows down to notice the timing:
"And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on." (Luke 23:54, KJV)
The preparation. Friday has always carried that quiet name. It was the day for making ready, so that when the Sabbath arrived, there was room to receive it. Anticipation is part of the gift. Just as a family gets ready for a guest they love, a little looking ahead tells our hearts that something good is coming.
Preparing does not mean a spotless house or a perfect meal. For most of us it is much smaller. Setting out clothes for tomorrow. Putting a pot of soup on early. Sending the last work email and then actually closing the laptop. Lighting a candle, or simply pausing at the door to say, "Lord, I am ready to rest with You." These little acts are less about the chores and more about turning the heart toward the Sabbath before it begins.
A small step for this week: If this reaches you after sundown, keep it for next Friday. Choose one simple act of preparation, like tidying one room, making tomorrow's lunch ahead, or writing down what can wait until Sunday, and do it about an hour before sunset. As you finish, pray one sentence inviting God into the hours ahead.
May you feel the Sabbath drawing near like a friend coming up the road. May the waiting itself become a kind of welcome.
