The Friday Whisper

Enjoying Creation

Why the fourth commandment points us back to the sea, the sky, and everything God made.

Every Sabbath is a kind of anniversary. When God gave the fourth commandment, He did not ground it in our exhaustion or our schedules. He grounded it in the world itself:

"For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." (Exodus 20:11, KJV)

That means the Sabbath is, first of all, a celebration of what God made. Before it says anything about us, it points to the sea, the sky, the sparrows, the oak tree on your street, and the people who walk beneath it. Each seventh day we are invited to look at creation the way God did at the end of that first week, and to call it good.

It is easy to treat nature as scenery, the backdrop we pass on the way to somewhere important. But the Bible treats it as testimony. The trees and the tides have been telling the truth about their Maker all week long, whether or not anyone stopped to listen. The Sabbath is when we finally sit still long enough to hear them.

This does not require a mountain or a national park. A city sidewalk has wildflowers pushing up through the cracks. A kitchen window has weather. A child turning a leaf over in their hands is learning something about God, even if no one calls it that.

A small step for this weekend: The Sabbath begins at sundown, so let the sunset be your welcome. On Friday evening, step outside or stand at an open window for five minutes and simply watch the light change. Notice the colors, the sounds, the temperature of the air. Then say a short thank you to the One who made the evening and the morning.

May your Sabbath feel like walking through a gift that is still being unwrapped. May you see the Maker's handwriting everywhere you look.
